Poker tips from a NETELLER card shark
Posted by Todd in Community, Gaming & sports, How-to, Poker on March 11th, 2010
Hey there. Welcome to my first in a series of articles about playing poker online or on the felt.
I have been playing poker for more than 4 years and have turned a hobby into a blossoming career. By contributing to the NETELLER blog, I figured I would discover something about myself, learn more about poker and teach people about the game I love.
Humble beginnings to serious success
I learned to play online, but it took a lot of time and work to grow in the game. Early on, I was fortunate to come across a few video training sites, mainly CardRunners and DeucesCracked, that helped develop my skills. I thank them for some of my successes. But I also studied, researched and talked over hands or plays with friends and other poker players in order to get better at the game.
I have cashed in at numerous World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) on PokerStars and many Full Tilt Online Poker Series (FTOPS). I consider my skill to be strong in tourneys as well in cash games. I have Canadian Poker Tour championship wins as well as final tables. I consider these to be a very important part of my growth, but my biggest accomplishment to date has been cashing in at the main event of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in 2009. This was my first WSOP event. As I continue to play at the WSOP, I will share my experiences and tips.
Tip of the month
My tip for this month is to polarize your range (make your range wide – as in very hard to read so that opponents cannot predict what you have from hand to hand as the game goes on) pre-flop in heads-up play. One thing I learned early on while playing heads-up is that if you only raise or re-raise your big hands pre-flop – like kk, AA, Ak – you will not get the value you really deserve when dealt these hands. It also makes it much easier for players to exploit your tendencies. If your opponents know that you only raise and re-raise with this range, imagine how easy it is for them to see a flop and do a flop or fold strategy. If they flop 2 pair or better they know you have AA and won’t fold.
By polarizing your range pre-flop in heads-up play, you make your range much wider and increase the likelihood of getting value to be paid off. You want to make your opponents believe that you can have any hand in any possible spot. That is what makes it tough to take advantage of and they fear you more. If you only re-raise or 3-bet with big hands pre-flop, you are giving valuable information away to a good player. My advice is to try and balance your big value hands and bluffing hands to make your ranges in any spot possible. This is especially important pre-flop. This skill will not be easy to learn and some of you may be experts, but all I can suggest is start adding it in slowly to your game.
Bonus tips
Maintain a healthy and active mind. It’s crucial to work it out as much as possible. Keeping your mind sharp could give you that extra edge in a game. It’s a big advantage if you’re like me and find yourself at a table for 37 hours. I suggest that you review the history of the hands you have played to learn about what you may have done wrong and what you can do to improve your game. And getting opinions from other poker players doesn’t hurt either. Just keep yourself open to constantly learning, no matter where those lessons come from.
Another skill – and I cannot stress this enough – is to learn to control your emotions. I have seen many great players let the average Joe beat them simply because they couldn’t control their emotions.
I hope what I have shared will help you in your next game. And I’ll be here next month with some more tips. Good luck!

NETELLER gets some Friendly face-time
We recently ran a fun mini-promotion on our Twitter and Facebook feeds based on the Brazil v. Republic of Ireland Friendly played on 2 March. We asked you guys to tell us who scored the opening goal and for your troubles, we’d give one lucky winner 25 EUR. It turned out to be a tough wager to turn down. André K. of Brazil seized the opportunity by posting the first goal on the NETELLER Facebook page. So congrats André, you have won 25 EUR!
NETELLER also had an unmissable presence during the Friendly. Whether you watched it on TV or were there in person, you may have noticed the NETELLER boards on display at certain points throughout the match. But if you missed them, no worries. You can check out the screen captures below.

Were you there? Tell us about it.

Revenue share with My VIP Network
Posted by Leanne in Rewards & promotions, VIP on March 1st, 2010
As I was sitting down to write this blog, I wanted to compare our new VIP revenue share plan to some childhood story, life experience or business venture. While working on the program, it kept reminding me of something, but I couldn’t put my finger on what it was. And then it occurred to me — My VIP Network is pretty similar to a babysitting scheme I came up with when I was a kid.
I was the type of eight-year old who called myself an entrepreneur, so you can probably imagine the kinds of business ideas I’d come up with after reading The Babysitter’s Club in my blanket fort. I started signing up my friends to work as babysitters under me. In exchange, I provided their information to my list of contacts. Every time someone got a babysitting job, I’d get a portion of their pay. All I had to do was sit back, relax and let nature take its course. Not bad for an eight-year old, right?
Well, the My VIP Network revenue share program is a lot like that, but 100% baby free. I’m sure you’ll agree that’s an improvement.
As a NETELLER VIP you sit at the top of the food chain. You’re the entrepreneur. All you have to do is refer your friends, sit back, relax and count your bankroll. And because any friend of yours is a friend of ours, we’re making everyone you refer an instant VIP, with all the great benefits that come with it.
Refer your friends in the month of March and:
- You’ll receive a 20% bonus on your referees first transfer to a merchant up to 20 EUR
- We’ll gift your referee with a 10% bonus on their first transfer to a merchant up to 10 EUR (plus, give them VIP status for 3 months)
- You’ll earn 30% of all revenue from fees generated when the member transfers money to merchants for 12 months from the date of first transaction
- You’ll enjoy free money transfers between yourself and your friends for the first 30 days (rebate)
- Everyone you refer gets a great incentive to keep making you money with 1% cash back on all transfers they make to merchant sites during their 3rd month with us
I’m not even going to ask if this sounds interesting… it should appeal to anyone who likes easy cash, which all of us do. So visit the My VIP Network site to register for your official referral sign up link and start raking in the easy dough.

Everton FC at Tottenham Hotspur with NETELLER and Mansion
Posted by Brendan in Gaming & sports, Sports on March 1st, 2010
It started off as any normal match day, a train to White Hart Lane and a stroll to the ground. But that’s where the normality stopped. We were greeted at reception with our passes for the day, which were kindly supplied by Mansion and made our way to the 4th floor Directors Box.
The hospitality was superb: champagne on entrance that was filled as soon as the last drop had left the glass and a buffet table that wouldn’t look out of place on a 5 star cruise ship. We made our way through to the main ground to place a bet with www.mansion.com. My bets were first scorer Pavlyuchenko and final score 3-1.

Everton FC at Tottenham Hotspur
But we weren’t there for the ambiance — we were there for the match. Our seats were right on the halfway line and provided a great view for the opening goal on 11 minutes. Huddlestone’s long ball put Defoe behind the defence and he fired across goal for “Super Pav” to slide home his fifth in the space of a week! We didn’t have to wait long for the second goal as Spurs’s Croatian contingent linked up neatly on the right-hand corner of the box before Modric curled an exquisite looping effort in off the bar. Spurs had a handful of decent chances to increase the lead but it finished 2-0 at the break as we made our way back into the box to warm up whilst we brushed shoulders with high profile businessmen and ex professionals.
The second half started with pressure building from Everton and they made a breakthrough on 54 minutes, a goal mouth scramble led to Yakubu bundling home, 2-1. Soon after an injury for Huddlestone meant Spurs were forced into a defensive game for the remaining 35 minutes. Pressure started to build again but Spurs were able to hold on for a deserved 2-1 victory.
I had a truly magnificent day and would like to extend my thanks to the people at Manson for their hospitality. But now I must be off to mansion.com to collect my winnings.
Up the Spurs!
