Watch out for malware

What is malware?

Malware, also known as malicious software, is software that can become very harmful to your computer, steal personal data or try to access unauthorized systems and networks. Malware is typically disguised in order to trick users into installing or activating it. Viruses, worms, Trojan horses, spyware and adware are all known as malware.

Malware is keen on getting its claws into your personal data, often including your personal banking and identity information.

How to protect yourself

The first step to protecting yourself against malware is being online-smart. Don’t ever click, visit, or download any link, website or program that you may be unsure of.

Secondly, ensure that your computer is up to date with the latest anti-virus and anti-malware software.  As well, update your computer’s operating system and software on a regular basis. Use strong passwords, never use the same password for multiple uses or share your password. Keep your firewall on and finally - don’t be tricked into downloading malware. Always know what you’re downloading.
